An issue that caused about 400 Peoples Gas customers in Hempfield to lose service was corrected Tuesday morning, according to the utility.

Crews started going door-to-door to make safety checks and relight appliances, the utility said in a message on its website posted at 10:15 a.m.

Spokesman Barry Kukovich said the outage was caused when a gas supplier shut off a valve in the area. Kukovich hopes to have all service restored Tuesday but said it is a slow process.

“Since it is a workday and some people won’t be home, we’ll have trucks in the area into tonight to keep working,” he said.

Customers who are not home when crews arrive to do a safety check and relight appliances can call 1-800-764-0111 and schedule a time for another visit.

Residents were first alerted to the outage just after 7 p.m. Monday in the areas of Hunt Club, Janyce, Greenock, East Glennis, Stonehaven, Cleardale and Dunedin drives and Tuscan Way.

Later in the evening, the outage affected customers on St. Clair, Clawson and Gay. Meters were turned off at about 2 a.m. Tuesday while work was underway.

People with an emergency or medical condition that requires immediate gas service can call 1-800-400-4271.
