Fire department volunteers are among the first responders in their communities, and with Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday, Delmont librarian Denni Grassel approached members of the borough fire department with an idea.
“She mentioned that moms are kind of like the ‘first responders’ of the household,” Delmont Fire Chief Rich Balik said. “So she came up with an idea to go around and have sort of a Mother’s Day parade with a couple fire trucks.”
The “First Responders Thank First Responders” parade will be from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, as trucks will head all over the borough encouraging residents to wave hello, bang a pot, or even make a donation to the fire company.
Grassel’s original idea, Balik said, was to have a fire truck take the Easter Bunny all over the borough, but those plans were waylaid by the covid-19 pandemic.
“One of our guys, Rick Miller, wanted to do something to promote a little bit of support around town, sort of checking on everyone,” Balik said.
Miller and Grassel combined their efforts into Saturday’s parade.
It will kick off at 1 p.m. at Delmont VFD on Route 66 before hitting Abbe Place, Manor Road and Greensburg Street, before traveling around to the rest of the borough.
