Delmont Public Library officials want anyone and everyone to be able to enjoy their Outdoor Learning Center, slated to open June 5.
And, while it is already set to include solar bird baths, bird houses and the reestablishment of the library’s outdoor butterfly garden, a fundraising campaign is underway to build a walkway that will allow universal access to all of the features at the center.
“It’s going to be so much fun for kids and older adults, really everyone in the community,” Librarian Denni Grassel said. “We want everyone to be able to enjoy the area, regardless of whether they have a disability.”
Library officials hope to raise $25,000 for the pathway. Personalized pavers are available for $100 and, for an additional $50, a special emblem like a heart or paw print can be added.
Orders are due by April 15.
As part of promoting both the new library building and the learning center, staff are planning a year’s worth of monthly book gifts for all children age six and under in the borough.
“We have 40 community sponsors, and St. John’s, St. Mary’s, Faith United Methodist and Salem Lutheran churches all helped to sponsor it,” Grassel said. “We’ll send one book a month, and it will be their book to keep. And when they get the book, hopefully that will bring them to the library.”
Grassel and the library staff are collecting a list of children in that age group who live in the borough.
