Delmont officials will place a gate restricting access to the borough dump site on the Shields Farm property during weekdays to prevent what police say is a mounting issue with garbage dumping.
“It’s getting to be a real problem,” Chief T.J. Klobucar said. “We’ve issued some citations recently, and we have trail cameras up there, but it can be difficult (to prevent).”
Public Works Director Bill Heaps said borough officials were able to track the source of a recent dumping incident to a Jeannette resident through a bank statement dumped along with other trash.
“One time, someone must have gutted a house and dumped it back there,” Klobucar said. “Motorcycle helmets, papers, personal stuff.”
The dump site, located behind Energi Fenestration Solutions off of Contact Place, is a popular location for borough residents to dump grass clippings and yard waste.
“People who go up there to dump clippings, they’re the ones who are upset about all the trash,” Klobucar said.
Councilman Stan Cheyne suggested installing a metal gate that would be open Saturday and Sunday for residents, but closed the rest of the week.
“We could maybe add signs saying no garbage, yard debris only, something along those lines,” Cheyne said.
The site currently has a sign saying “Due to violation the borough dump site is closed till (sic) further notice. No dumping is permitted.”
Council consensus was to install the gate and revisit the issue at its July meeting.
