Derry Area School Board member Sean Kemmerer opens a can of corn for free Christmas Eve meals that were being handed out at Taps N’ At restaurant in Derry on Thursday.

A group of Derry residents on Thursday gave out more than 170 Christmas dinners to families in need at Taps N’ At restaurant.

The giveaway was organized by Derry Area School Board member Sean M. Kemmerer and Taps N’ At owners Larry and Jessica Gray, who recently founded the Derry Area Philanthropy Committee.

The group did a Thanksgiving dinner giveaway last month, and its success inspired the committee to do the same thing for Christmas, Kemmerer said.

Members raised money from the community to buy the meals, which include ham, lasagna, pasta salad, corn, salad, rolls and dessert.
