A Westmoreland County jury convicted a Derry Township man for causing a 2019 vehicle crash in Unity in which his passenger sustained serious injuries.

Robert S. Mayer, 61, following a two-day trial, was found guilty this week of two felony offenses, aggravated assault by vehicle and causing an accident while driving without a license. He was also convicted of three drunken driving-related offenses.

Police said Mayer did not have a valid driver’s license when he ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle shortly before 11 p.m. on Nov. 6, 2019 near the intersection of Route 30 and Route 981 in Unity. Neither Mayer or his passenger wore a seat belt, according to court papers.

Mayer was taken to AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville for treatment of head injuries. A front-seat passenger in his vehicle suffered a fractured spine and nose, broken ribs and internal bleeding, according to court records.

Police said Mayer’s blood-alcohol content was 0.14%. The legal limit to drive in Pennsylvania is 0.08%.

Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Tim Krieger said he will conduct a sentencing hearing for Mayer in about three months.
