Quick action by a Derry Township farmer Tuesday morning saved a Quonset hut where fire had started in the storage area that held bales of hay, a fire official said.

The fire at the Eaglehouse family farm on McCullough Road ruined the round hay bales, but the farmer was able to use equipment to remove bales and the storage hut was not destroyed, said Derry Township Fire Chief Mark Piantine.

The fire was reported at about 5:30 a.m. and firefighters were on the scene for a few hours, Paintine said.

Derry Township firefighters were assisted by units from Derry, Blairsville, New Alexandria and several tankers from fire departments, he said.
