The Roman Catholic Diocese of Greensburg will celebrate its 70th anniversary Wednesday with a special Mass led by Bishop Larry J. Kulick, the diocese announced.

The Mass will be livestreamed at dioceseofgreensburg.org and on its Facebook page and YouTube channel. It starts at 11:45 a.m.

The diocese was started March 10, 1951, by Pope Pius XII and covers about 128,000 Catholics in Armstrong, Fayette, Indiana and Westmoreland counties. Its first leader, Bishop Hugh Lamb, established 10 new parishes and eight new schools, including Greensburg Central Catholic High School, according to a biography on the diocese website.

In the decades since its creation, the diocese has seen growth from the addition of St. Anne Home in Greensburg to the start of The Catholic Accent newspaper. A multi-million dollar capital campaign helped the diocese strengthen its endowments and a Jubilee Mass in 2000 was attended by 2,000 people at Latrobe Memorial Stadium, the largest in diocese history, according to biographical information.

Six bishops have led the diocese over its 70 years, with the latest, Kulick, being installed Feb. 11. Kulick, who grew up in Leechburg and is a lifelong member of the diocese, is the first native priest to hold the role.
