Dollar General moving from Salem Plaza to Route 66 corridor in Murrysville
Murrysville council will vote next month on a proposal to bring a Dollar General store to the Route 66 corridor just north of Delmont.
Bob Gage of GBT Realty, a Tennessee firm that contracts with Dollar General, outlined plans for a 10,640 square foot store on the northeast side of Route 66 across from Ringertown Road. Murrysville and adjacent towns are currently home to a dozen Dollar General stores.
The property is just over 2.8 acres, and roughly a third of it is located in Salem Township. Officials there agreed to turn over development authority for the property to Murrysville.
Gage said the store would be relocating from an existing location at Salem Plaza on Route 22.
“They were relying on landlords to maintain the buildings and signage, and that was not happening,” Gage said. “They decided they’d build and maintain their own facilities.”
Murrysville’s planning commission recommended approval of the project on Aug. 8 with a list of conditions that include creating a 125-foot turning lane on southbound Route 66 to access the property and clearing an embankment to open up the property’s sight lines.
Gage said delivery trucks typically arrive early Monday mornings.
“The idea is to get there before the store opens, and the site is designed so the truck can get in there, make all its maneuvers and get out without impacting any spaces or landscaping,” he said.
The proposal does not require a traffic study, and Gage estimated it would generate about 10 cars per hour on average, with a daily peak of 20 per hour.
“It won’t require a traffic light or any additional traffic controls,” he said.
Councilman Mac McKenna said he was happy to see the turning lane as part of the plans.
“The tri-axle traffic you see on 66 is unbelievable, and they don’t go slow,” he said.
The proposal will come back before council for a vote in September.
