Unity and Derry townships both have reinstated burning bans following a stretch of dry weather.

The bans were announced Thursday in Unity and Friday in Derry Township and are in effect until further notice.

Open burning, recreational fires and fireworks are prohibited in both townships.

Prospects for an end to the dry spell aren’t good. The next possibility of rain doesn’t arrive until Tuesday, with just a 20% chance of precipitation between then and Thursday, according to Mike Kennedy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Pittsburgh office.

The last recorded rain at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity was just under half an inch that fell over five hours early on Sept. 7.

Similar extended dry conditions prompted the neighboring townships to issue burning bans in late July. Those bans were lifted on Aug. 10.
