Eleven registered participants are planning to spend the first part of their Independence Day holiday on a morning paddling excursion Thursday on the lake at Keystone State Park.

They’re hoping to spot two bald eagles that have been seen at the Derry Township park in recent months, as well as other wild birds.

Eagles are becoming more common in Westmoreland County, and two have been seen at Keystone since last year by park naturalist Jean H. Keene. She noted registration for Thursday’s program, “Eagle Watching on the Lake,” is now closed.

In recent years, bald eagles also have been documented near the Loyalhanna Dam in nearby Loyalhanna Township.
