With a brand-new building that is just about ready to be filled with borough history, Export Historical Society officials are turning to the Senator John Heinz History Center for some expert assistance.

Following the recent completion of the Export train station replica, historical society officials joined the Heinz History Center’s Affiliates Program, made up of more than 125 regional historical societies and organizations.

Membership in the program brings the expertise and resources of the History Center’s staff to these organizations, especially in the areas of museum and archival work that enable each affiliate organization to reach its goals.

“Instead of winging it, I figured we’d get some professional advice,” said society member Melanie Litz. “This gives us access to their archives as well as their assistance in organizing our historical collection.”

The society received its official nonprofit status earlier this year, and it is beginning to explore permanent historical installations at the train station as well as temporary or seasonal displays, Litz said.

Through the affiliate program, society members will also have a chance to spread the word about their work, by sending brochures that will be placed in the History Center’s visitor center.

“I think it’s a really good relationship to develop as we keep working toward our goals,” Litz said.
