Export officials spent a good portion of the past year updating the borough’s playground, off of Roosevelt Avenue, and want to keep that momentum going as spring approaches.
“We’ve cut the (dead) trees down, we did the basketball court, and now we need to fix that fence,” Councilman John Nagoda said. In the past year, borough officials brought in goats from Allegheny Goatscape to help clear the steep hillside leading down to the park, resurfaced the basketball court and cleared a number of older, hazardous trees from the property.
Nagoda said the borough should either fix or remove the park’s fence, part of which has fallen into disrepair.
“We have more children running around town than we’ve had in 20 years,” he said. “I worry that if a kid climbs that fence, they’re going to get cut on the top, because it’s all broken.”
Nagoda also suggested painting “SLOW” on the pavement or adding “Children at Play” signs at some borough intersections.
In other business:
• Preparatory work is underway to move the borough’s veterans monument from the American Legion parking lot to a more-central spot near Washington Avenue.
The Export Historical Society is taking donations to help offset the cost of the project, and donors of $250 or more will be recognized with permanent plaques affixed to the monument.
Those specific “sponsorship” donations are due by the end of March, however Councilwoman Melanie Litz said regular donations will be accepted after the deadline.

• The borough set Aug. 21 as the date for its annual Ethnic Food & Music Festival. A vendor application is available at the borough website.
• The Export Historical Society is well on its way to becoming an official nonprofit entity, separate from the borough.
As such, the two borough accounts associated with the society will be transferred to new ones in the society’s name. One is a general fund account, and the other is for donations to the monument-moving project.
