Firefighters responded to a structure fire on the 300 block of Loucks Avenue in Scottdale on Monday afternoon. There were no reported injuries.

A home and salon were damaged in Scottdale Monday afternoon during a fast-moving fire, said fire Chief Dave Wendell.

But the contents of some rooms were spared because the doors to them were closed, he said. Photos posted on the department’s Facebook page from inside the Loucks Avenue home showed two rooms appearing to be untouched by the flames that spread outside the door.

“You close before you doze is the saying,” Wendell said. “If you keep that door shut when you’re home or not, that’s a perfect example.”

Firefighters were called to Loucks Avenue just before 3:30 p.m. and found flames on the rear of the home that also houses Sorrento Styling Salon. The occupants escaped unharmed.

The flames climbed into the attic.

“Those homes are big and they’re very spacious and if it gets a jump on you, it’s going to get a jump on you,” Wendell said.

The blaze appeared to have started on the back porch and is believed to be accidental, he said. Scottdale called in help from neighboring companies because volunteers are in short supply at that time of day. Firefighters were at the scene until about 8 p.m.

Wendell praised support of residents who chipped in with food and water for the firefighters.
