A Hempfield Township man died late Thursday afternoon when a farm tractor he was using to mow grass overturned and fell into a creek, according to Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson.

Clifford E. Schweinsburg Jr., 79, was mowing grass in Hempfield along Township Line Run Creek — a tributary of Sewickley Creek — with a New Holland farm tractor when it fell from the embankment. The cause for the fall is unclear, Carson said.

The accident, which occurred near Jason Wilkinson Nursery off Armbrust- Brinkerton Road, was reported at 5:39 p.m., according to Westmoreland County 911. State police were investigating the fatality.

State police public information Officer Steve Limani could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday night.

Firefighters from Midway-St. Clair, New Stanton and Youngwood assisted at the scene, said Hempfield Township fire Captain Don Thoma.

Bacha Funeral Home in Greensburg will handle funeral arrangements, Carson said. Cause and manner of death are pending autopsy and toxicology reports, he said.
