A Greensburg firefighter whose home was damaged by fire Wednesday night received hugs of support from his fellow firefighters and first responders as he sat on his neighbor’s front porch steps and watced his colleague’s efforts to extinguish any hot spots.
Greensburg Fire Chief Tom Bell said the home of Trevor Turin at 408 N. Pennsylvania Ave., sustained fire damage in a second-floor living room and smoke and water damage in other parts of the house.
Turin, a member of Greensburg Hose Co. No. 8, said he was not home at the time of the fire, which was reported at 7:15 p.m.
Bell said that a dog died in the fire.
There were flames on the second floor of the house when firefighters arrived on the scene, Bell said.
The chief said quick action by firefighters kept the fire from spreading past the living room of the house, which was divided into two apartments.
The fire was extinguished by about 7:40 p.m.
The house is located about three blocks from Greensburg Hose Co. No. 2. A neighbor, Ernie Bevilacqua, said they were on the scene very quickly.
Bell and several Greensburg firefighters arrived on the scene from a memorial service the fire department conducted for the late Glenn Thomas, a longtime fire department member, at the Leo M. Bacha Funeral Home in Southwest Greensburg.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Greensburg Police Lt. Jason Gain, Bell said.
Firefighters from Greensburg, South Greensburg, Southwest Greensburg and Hempfield assisted at the scene.
