A Ligonier Township house was destroyed by fire Monday night and the fire rekindled early Tuesday morning, according to a Westmoreland County Public Safety supervisor.
The fire that destroyed the home of David J. Popola and Tamara Haitz along Feathers Lane, three miles north of Ligonier, was reported at 7:45 p.m. Monday.
On Tuesday morning, firefighters from the Wilpen and Waterford fire departments returned to the scene around 6:10 a.m. to douse flames that had rekindled.
Popola attempted to retrieve some items from inside the house as flames continued to burn a corner of the structure whose roof had collapsed.
The couple were not at home when the fire was discovered by a neighbor, Popola said. The neighbor was unable to rescue their two dogs from the flaming building, Popola said.
Wilpen fire chief Rick Roberts could not be reached for comment Tuesday morning.
