The state police fire marshal in Greensburg was unable to determine an exact cause of a fire Friday night in Jeannette that damaged the second floor of an abandoned house.

State police fire marshal Trooper Seth Helman said anyone with information about the blaze at 509 Lavelle St. is asked to call Jeannette Police Department at 724-527-4013. The fire was reported at 9 p.m. Friday.

Helman said firefighters found evidence of a squatter living inside the house. Firefighters said that the fire started in a second-floor bedroom.

Utility service had been cut off.

Helman said the listed owner of the house has been deceased since 2018 “and the house has been vacant since that time.”

Fire Chief Bill Frye said the fire was under control within minutes of crews arriving.
