Black smoke billows from a fire that destroyted a garage and extensively damaged an adjoining house on Monday, Dec. 23, 2019, on Arthur Street in Export.

A family of four was displaced and a firefighter was transported by ambulance when a Monday afternoon blaze destroyed an Export garage and extensively damaged an adjoining home.

The blaze was reported just before 1:30 p.m. on Arthur Street.

The garage was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, according to Export Fire Chief Stephen Opsitnick Jr. He said the fire spread to the associated home, just 5 feet away, causing extensive damage to the first floor.

“The house is unlivable,” he said, indicating the occupants — two adults and two teens — were going to stay with relatives.

“A firefighter from another station was being transported to get checked out,” said Opsitnick, who wasn’t sure of the problem experienced by the volunteer.

Lost in the garage were tools and several vehicles, including two trucks and a 1970s Chevy Nova, according to Opsitnick. He said the cause hasn’t been determined.

Firefighters from Murrysville, Delmont, Washington Township and New Alexandria also responded.
