Flights from Arnold Palmer airport to Fort Lauderdale, Myrtle Beach resume June 25
Commercial flights from Arnold Palmer Regional Airport to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., are slated to resume next month, according to officials at the Unity airport.
“We’re really excited about this. Spirit told us (Thursday) they will be going back to a full schedule to Fort Lauderdale and Myrtle Beach from Latrobe starting June 25,” said Gabe Monzo, executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority.
Spirit Airlines is the lone commercial carrier at the airport.
All flights from Arnold Palmer to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Myrtle Beach stopped April 8 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Spirit Airlines began a circular Orlando-Pittsburgh-Unity route May 3.
“The Orlando flights have been doing real well for us. The trip today (to Orlando) was fully booked,” Monzo said.
The Orlando flights occur on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays.
Spirit Airlines said a round-trip Unity-Orlando route will begin June 11. Separate round-trip flights between Pittsburgh and Orlando will be scheduled on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, beginning June 10.
“The terminal buildings are compliant and are sanitized daily, there are shields on the customer counters and masks are required in the terminal and on the airplane,” Monzo said.
“Hopefully, this shows we’re turning the corner on the impact of the pandemic here,” Monzo said.
Spirit officials did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
The airline already was booking reservations for the June flights today on its website, spirit.com.
The Palmer airport reported that just 423 passengers passed through the terminal in April. There were 30,747 passengers in April 2019.
