Emergency responders rescued occupants of a vehicle surrounded by flood waters around midnight Wednesday, according to dispatches from the Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety.

Monessen firefighters responded to Graham and Parente boulevards at 11:50 p.m. where about four people were stranded in a vehicle surrounded by flood waters. All of the occupants were out of the water by midnight.

Another vehicle was stuck in high water along Rostraver Road in Monessen around the same time. Parts of Route 906, which separates Rostraver and Monessen, was reported flood as well.

There were also reports of flooded roadways in Rostraver Township, including Willowbrook Road and Salem Road, as well as rocks and trees overturned on several roads from late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.

Storms swept through southern Westmoreland County between 11 and 11:45 p.m., the National Weather Service in Moon reported. The flooding likely was caused because of rain that had saturated the ground earlier Wednesday, said meteorologist Fred McMullen.
