Nancy Peters isn’t quite ready to leave Jeannette city government.

After losing re-election for council, she opted to take another job at city hall — controller.

Peters, 74, was the only person who submitted a resume and letter of interest for the post after the winner of a 30-way tie declined the job following November’s election. She was appointed by council Monday.

“I still love the city and they needed somebody,” she said. “There’s a lot of work involved.”

Peters was one of 30 people who tied with a single write-in vote. She was the only vote-getter who showed up at a Nov. 19 lottery to determine who would be declared the winner. Another woman won but declined the job, prompting city officials to seek interested candidates for the four-year post.

Peters said she isn’t sure who wrote her name in but she’s looking forward to working with city officials.

“I’m glad that we have a controller that’s going to show up to the meetings every month and be an active player,” said Nathan Bish, city clerk.

Peters served four years on council and previously was the city’s recreation commission director.

The controller, which pays $1,125 annually for the elected position, is heavily involved in city finances and spending oversight. The job requires a review of all expenditures and signing of checks or warrants authorizing checks.

The previous controller did not run for re-election.
