Giant Eagle proposes expanded Unity GetGo with beer sales, car wash
Giant Eagle wants to sell beer and wine as well as add a drive-through car wash as part of an expanded GetGo convenience store proposed in Unity.
Supervisors likely will vote on a conditional-use zoning approval at their July 18 meeting, township solicitor Gary Falatovich said. Giant Eagle made the request at a hearing Tuesday before the supervisors.
Pat Avolio, Giant Eagle’s director of development, said the 6,000-square-foot store and accompanying gas pumps are proposed to take the place of a smaller GetGo store at the nearby Mountain Laurel Plaza, freeing the latter space for new development.
Giant Eagle will submit a formal land development plan for the new GetGo site — at the former Arnold Palmer Motors dealership, along Route 30 at Giffin Drive — provided the township grants the conditional use approval required in Unity’s regional commercial zoning district, Avolio said.
The proposed new 3.8-acre GetGo site would occupy three parcels and a small portion of a fourth. In addition to a 2,000-square-foot car wash, the area surrounding the store would include parking spaces for diners and seven gas pumps with 14 fueling positions.
“This would be a 24/7 operation,” Avolio said. “It’s not a guarantee to be that, but we would plan to operate that.”
He noted the plan to sell alcoholic beverages at the store would depend on gaining permission through the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. The new store would include seating for 30 diners, as required by the PLCB for alcohol sales.
According to Avolio, the station would have two access points — one along Route 30 and one on Giffin Drive, close to Route 30 — that would allow only right-in and right-out turns. Two-way traffic would be permitted at an entrance further south on Giffin Drive and on a proposed new lane connecting the site to Medical Park Drive.
Giffin Drive also serves as one of the entrances to the Wildcat Commons plaza, anchored by Walmart and Lowe’s stores.
The GetGo store would occupy the eastern section of a roughly 12-acre site owned by Giant Eagle. The remainder of the property would be available for other development, Avolio said.
