Greensburg’s police department has a new detective.

Patrolman Justin Scalzo was sworn into his new position during Monday’s city council meeting.

Scalzo has been on Greensburg’s police force for eight years. He previously worked as a Jeannette police officer.

During his time in Greensburg, Scalzo has worked as a handler for Falco, the department’s police dog that retired in June, among other responsibilities.

The promotion will increase Scalzo’s salary to $83,028 per year. It comes months after Charles Irvin was promoted from detective to detective sergeant, city officials said.

Several promotions have taken place in the police department following the resignation of Chief Chad Zucco last year. In July 2020, Robert Stafford, a 32-year veteran of the department, was promoted to police chief, after spending about four years as captain.

After Stafford’s promotion, Denningwas promoted to captain. Denning joined the department in 2008 and worked his way up to lieutenant in 2018.

Early this year, two police officers were promoted within the department as officials still worked to fill gaps left by Zucco’s resignation. In February, Donald Cole was promoted to lieutenant from sergeant and patrolman Reginald Harbarger Jr. to sergeant.

In addition, council members last month accepted the retirement of Patrolman Kerry Dieter, who was on the force for 23 years, Denning said.

Scalzo’s promotion was unanimously approved by council members.
