Greensburg Art Center members follow 'Vision' for new exhibition
The state of the world is the inspiration for the upcoming member exhibition at Greensburg Art Center.
“We decided that, with the way the world is right now, all of our institutions are being challenged to make things work,” exhibition chairwoman Rosemary Sovyak said.
What everyone needs, she said, is vision — and that became the name of the show opening Sunday in the center at 230 Todd School Road, Hempfield.
The show will debut during open hours from 1-4 p.m. Because of gathering-size restrictions, there will not be a formal reception, but packaged snacks will be served.
“A lot of our members are spending a lot of time at home,” Sovyak said. “We thought we’d see how they would interpret the theme in their art with the idea of no boundaries.”
“Vision” will include 100 works by member artists. Each participant could submit two pieces, resulting in a varied array of oil and watercolor paintings, ink prints, sculpture and other media.
Among them are pottery pieces and mosaics made during on-site workshops. There also are pieces by new members who have never before exhibited at the center.
“The diversity in the entries is amazing. I’m very impressed with that,” said co-chair Tom Niggel. “There certainly are some talented people here.”
The artwork is being judged for cash prizes by Michael Walter, an exhibiting artist, art educator and tour coordinator for the University of Pittsburgh Nationality Rooms.
Names of winners of best of show, first, second and third places and eight honorable mentions will be posted at the opening.
Walter said he evaluated the works for “activation of space, vivacity and liveliness of the artist’s touch and use of materials in a very creative way, even more so than subject matter.”
“I’m looking at things that make them wonderful to look at and give a sense of something you’d like to have on your wall and look at at all times,” he said.
“It’s a very eclectic show, but that’s kind of what we wanted,” Sovyak said. “We wanted to see their vision and where it’s going.”
A Cafe Art session is planned from 1-4 p.m. Feb. 6 in conjunction with the exhibition. Guest speakers Gary and Ginger Hepler of Vandergrift will discuss their artistic collaborations — Gary is a welder and Ginger is a painter.
The exhibition will close Feb. 24.
