First Christian Church of Greensburg has delivered sweet treats to people in need for decades, but members have had to change up their tradition because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We didn’t skip a beat, honestly,” said the Rev. John Owen, church pastor.

For more than 20 years, church members baked more than 900 cookies a month, working with Tri-City Meals on Wheels in Southwest Greensburg to deliver them in the community.

“It’s so long ago, I don’t even know how we got involved with it, but it’s a ministry that we’ve always supported, and we like making cookies,” Owen said.

Because of covid-19, making cookies is no longer an option. Meals on Wheels stopped accepting donations of homemade food to reduce the risk of the virus spreading.

Most Meals on Wheels recipients are seniors, who are more vulnerable to the virus.

“Safety is always forefront in our mind, so we’ll adapt,” Owen said.

The church held a “Carload of Cookies” drive to buy Oreos, Nutter Butters and other prepackaged cookies.

It raised money to buy more than 3,700 cookies, which will be loaded in a church member’s SUV and delivered to Meals on Wheels recipients next week.

Owen said those interested in helping should contact Tri-City Meals on Wheels directly at 724-837-6117.
