Smoke detectors are a necessity for any home, and Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department is partnering with an area hospital to make the life-saving devices available to those in need.

The department recently received 50 detectors from the UPMC Mercy Burn Unit and is offering them free of charge to anyone who needs one, regardless of whether they reside in Greensburg.

Greensburg VFD President Rick Steele said detectors can be obtained by reaching out via the department’s Facebook page or by approaching a firefighter at one of the department’s stations.

“To not have smoke detectors in a house is just tragic,” Steele said. “Early detection is key to saving people’s lives.”

The department also is getting a new Police Interceptor that will be used as a vehicle for the fire chief. The Greensburg VFD Relief Association is purchasing the vehicle for $46,885, with the city providing insurance and covering maintenance costs.

Steele said the existing chief’s vehicle will be shifted for use by an officer on duty during evenings and overnight hours.
