Retired Penn Township firefighter Bill “Pappy” Swartz raises a hand before blowing the whistle to start the Battle of the Barrel in 2019 at Lynch Field during the 25th annual Greensburg Community Days.

Greensburg is not having its traditional community days festival, which typically stretches four days around the Memorial Day holiday because of covid-related restrictions, but the city’s volunteer fire department is organizing a one-day festival this year at the end of July.

In an effort to provide a bright spot during the days of pandemic-related restrictions that are slowly being lifted, the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department will hold a community-based celebration from 2 to 10 p.m. July 31 at Lynch Field along Route 119, said Rick Steele, president of the Greensburg fire department.

This celebration, free to both visitors and vendors, will feature food trucks, vendors and entertainment. There will be a battle of the barrel competition among area fire departments at 2:30 p.m. and three bands will perform from 4 to 10 p.m.

A free shuttle bus from DMJ Transportation will pick up festival-goers on Pennsylvania Avenue at the Court House Annex. There will not be any parking at Lynch Field.
