A Greensburg man was jailed over the weekend and his dog seized after police said it had a severe infection related to an improper tail docking procedure, according to court papers.

The dog’s injuries were reported to authorities while Bryan J. Thompson, 56, was at Harry’s Bar Friday with the 3-year-old Rottweiler named Leo. The dog was biting at its rear end while police talked to Thompson outside the bar. He claimed to have taken the animal to a veterinarian recently and police gave a deadline the following day to provide records from that visit, according to court papers.

When Thompson failed to show up at city hall, police charged him with aggravated cruelty to animals and related offenses. The dog was taken to a veterinarian who reported that it had punctures on its body and an abscess on its front leg in addition to the infection, police said.

Thompson was being held at the Westmoreland County Prison on $25,000 bail. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 30.
