A Greensburg man convicted earlier for smuggling drugs into the Westmoreland County Prison pleaded guilty Thursday to a felony weapons offense and was ordered to serve up to 23 months behind bars.

Jamel Miles, 34, was originally jailed March 3, 2021, after he was arrested by Greensburg police on charges that he was drunk in public and illegally possessed a 22-caliber Beretta. Later, as he was processed into the county jail investigators said they found Miles in possession of a backpack that contained plastic bags in which multiple pills including 75 Xanax tablets, an anti-anxiety medication, and 16 pink oxycodone pills.

In court on Thursday, prosecutors dismissed one weapons charge as well as charges of public drunkenness and disorderly conduct in connection with the original arrest.

Common Pleas Court Judge Christopher Feliciani ordered Miles to serve at least 11 1/2 months in jail and that he be released to treatment if recommended by a drug and alcohol evaluation to be conducted while he is behind bars.

He was not given credit for time previously served in jail after his original arrest.

Miles pleaded guilty Jan. 24 to one drug possession charge in connection with the incident last year at the jail, sentenced to serve 11 1/2 to 23 months in jail and given credit for the nearly 10 months had previously served behind bars.
