Several guest stars from Band Together Pittsburgh will take over the microphone and drums during an autism-friendly performance Saturday at Greensburg Music Fest.
Performers on the autism spectrum will provide three opening acts for The Nied’s Hotel Band at St. Clair Park. Members of the band plan to take a break during certain songs to allow four vocalists and drummer to take over, said Lisa Hnath, who does event planning and fundraising for Band Together Pittsburgh.
All of the musicians will perform a group song at the end of the concert.
While social interaction may be difficult for some on the autism spectrum, getting on stage can be a place for them to have a dialogue in a different way, Hnath said.
“They’re on the stage and it’s a one-way conversation,” she said. “It’s really interesting to see how they shine.”
Greensburg Music Fest runs from noon to 9 p.m. with numerous local acts taking various stages around the city. The event is free and vendors, art and food trucks will be scattered around town.
The performance in St. Clair Park will begin at 2 p.m.
Band Together Pittsburgh is a nonprofit organization that provides music-related programming and opportunities for people on the autism spectrum. The group holds open mic nights, music therapy and drum circles around the area.
Giving someone who is on the autism spectrum an opportunity to express themselves through music on a stage can be life-changing and confidence-building, Hnath said. Having a script of sorts in the form of music allows them to communicate with the crowd on their own terms while sharing their gifts with others.
“They get the same respect,” she said.
