Greensburg Salem students and families attending the annual Back to School Bash next week will be able to meet the district’s first assistant superintendent and support the student-run Mini-THON fundraiser.

The Back to School Bash is slated for 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Offutt Field, 109 Laird St. in Greensburg. The free event features music, games, food trucks and opportunities to be connected to community resources.

The marching band and cheerleading squad will kick off the event, shortly followed by recognition of fall sports teams at 5:15 p.m. A corn hole tournament will begin at 6 p.m. in support of the district’s Mini-THON program, launched via a student’s senior project in 2015.

Those interested in participating in the corn hole tournament can send a message including their name and their partner’s name to Greensburg Salem Mini-THON on Facebook or @gsminithon on Instagram. Registration costs $20 per team. The cost will be $25 for those registering the day of the event.

A portion of food truck sales also will support the district’s Mini-THON program.

Assistant Superintendent Kara Gardner, hired by the school board in May, will attend the event to meet with students and families.

Gardner, 36, of New Alexandria comes to the district from Derry Area High School, where she served as principal.

“I believe in the power of connection, and I cannot wait to meet and see all our families and community members coming together at this special kickoff event,” Gardner said in a statement. “We can’t wait to start another great year.”
