In the face of rising food insecurity, local governments, organizations and businesses are stepping up their efforts to collect food donations.

Greensburg officials have announced they will host a citywide food drive beginning Tuesday through Nov. 19, offering free parking at metered spaces to encourage area residents to donate nonperishable food and household items. The food donations are to be unopened and in their original packaging. No glass jars will be accepted.

The city’s offer of free parking at metered spaces must be approved by Greensburg City Council when it meets on Monday. The city enforces parking at meters between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays, but not on weekends. The city’s regular parking laws will remain in effect for leased or reserved spaces, including the Bell Garage on West Otterman Street, according to the city administration.

“With everything going on in the world around us, we wanted to try and do our part for residents of Greensburg,” city administrator Kelsye Milliron said.

“Every donation, no matter how small, helps make a difference for someone in need,” Miliron said.

Donations will go to the Greensburg area nonprofit Feeding the Spirit, which offers a free weekly, take-out hot meal Thursday evenings at Otterbein United Methodist Church at the intersection of West Otterman Street and College Avenue. The organization, founded in 2011, also helps those experiencing homelessness or housing instability by offering rent aid, emergency shelter arrangements, as well as provide individuals in need with other items such as pet food, toiletries, diapers, gas cards and more.

Donors can drop items off at the following locations in Greensburg:

• WIN Workforce Development Program, 29 W. Second St.

• Artisans of Hands & Hearts, 106 S. Pennsylvania Ave.

• Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream, 136 S. Pennsylvania Ave.
