Jeremy Kappel, of Greensburg, celebrates his 19th birthday with the 28th annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot in Greensburg, on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2019. The annual event raises approximately $30,000 for local charities including Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Greensburg Fire Department, and CASA of Westmoreland.

More than 2,500 runners gathered outside of the Westmoreland County Courthouse Thursday for the 28th Annual Greensburg Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. The yearly event was the largest in the history of the race, and race director Carol Palcic expected the runners to raise nearly $30,000 for local charities. This year CASA of Westmoreland, the Greensburg Fire Department and Big Brothers Big Sisters will be the recipients of the money raised.

Brandan Moretton, 24, of North Huntingdon, crossed the finish line first in 16:02. Samantha Bower, 29, of Monroeville, took first in the women’s category, with a time of 19:10.
