Greensburg woman testifies former boyfriend recorded video of sex acts with young child
A Greensburg woman testified Wednesday both she and her former boyfriend had sexual relations with a 5-year-old boy and recorded a video of at least one of the sessions.
That testimony came during the first day in the rape trial of Charles Jason Hunter, who police claim participated in sexual activity with the young child during several months in 2018.
Hunter, 35, is facing 26 charges including counts of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and child pornography offenses.
“The charges we are talking about are so counter to our fundamental notions that they are about impossible to believe they happened,” Assistant District Attorney James Lazar said in his opening statement to the jury. “We know it happened because she videotaped it.”
The prosecution claims Hunter persuaded his former girlfriend, Corby Jo Kinzey, to have sex with the child.
Kinzey, 28, of Greensburg, is in jail without bond as she awaits trial on 35 counts include rape and other sexual offenses. She testified Wednesday against Hunter and claimed they had sex in front of the child and used his cell phone to record video of her engaging in sex acts with the young boy.
Lazar told jurors at the start of Kinzey’s testimony that she has not been offered a plea bargain in exchange for her testimony.
“In fact, I told you I will seek the maximum amount of jail time I possibly can,” Lazar said.
In his opening statement to the jury, Doug Sepic, Hunter’s defense attorney, suggested Kinzey’s testimony should be discounted. He challenged her credibility and questioned her reasons for testifying against Hunter.
“It doesn’t mean she is not looking for something. She’s been waiting for trial for 41 months and now she’s willing to testify and hasn’t disposed of her case. Why is that?” Sepic said.
Police said the videos were discovered after at least one was sent to Hunter’s girlfriend at the time.
Amanda Smith, 32, of Greensburg, testified she had been dating Hunter for several months before he moved into her home in May 2018. She told jurors that she was sent one of the videos through social media and confronted Hunter. Smith said Hunter immediately took her phone and attempted to delete the video.
“I was in shock,” Smith testified.
Despite Hunter’s efforts, the video remained on the phone. Smith said she contacted Hunter’s mother to ask how it should be reported to authorities and sent her a copy of the video. Hunter’s mother contacted police, according to prosecutors.
Smith was arrested in August 2018, charged with two counts of dissemination of child pornography and served six months in jail before she was released in March 2019 on an unsecured bond. Her case is still pending.
Testimony will continue Thursday.
