Enzo, one of Greensburg’s newest police dogs, recently had a series of minor health problems that led to his retirement, officials said.

The health problems are non-life-threatening, “but it was slowing down his training,” said Capt. Shawn Denning. “He didn’t have the drive, it was kind of hindering him.”

Enzo’s handler, Patrolman Jason Fidazzo, tried several tactics to help the dog catch up to the rest of the class. They were unsuccessful.

In a post on the City of Greensburg Police K9 Unit’s Facebook page, Fidazzo said it was determined that it would be best to find a new home for Enzo as a pet.

“It’s a tough decision that had to be made for the dog and the handler, even for the department,” Denning said. “(Enzo) didn’t seem to be up to par, whether it was the compilation of the minor health problems or whatever it was.”

Enzo was one of two police dogs the city purchased in June, which cost $11,000 plus $2,800 for shipping. The cost was covered by funding received from the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office. Enzo and Ace — whose handler is Patrolman Ken Burke — came from the Netherlands.

Officials with the police department found a home for Enzo in Kittanning with a retired law enforcement officer, Denning said.

“Enzo left today to be with his new family and we will miss him tremendously,” Fidazzo posted Tuesday to Facebook. “These past few weeks have been hard on my family, knowing he was leaving but we are all relieved he is with a great family.”

Fidazzo said he plans to travel to Washington, D.C., on Friday to pick up a new police dog, Zeke. The brown and black dog is also from the Netherlands and is close to 1 years old. Zeke will begin narcotics training Monday.

According to Denning, cost of the new dog is free to the city.
