The band SHEL performs in the SummerSounds finale concert at St. Clair Park in 2019.

Summer Sounds, the popular Greensburg concert series, could make a return to St. Clair Park, the founder said.

The nonprofit Summer Sounds board of directors may decide within the next two weeks on resuming the Friday night concerts, said Gene James, the founder and board president.

“The city is OK with it,” James said.

Because of the covid pandemic, the concert series featuring a variety of music genres was canceled last year. With the concerts often drawing a few thousand people to the Robertshaw Amphitheater, there was no way they could have maintained social distancing.

But, Gov. Wolf has said that all covid-related restrictions on capacities of restaurants and outdoor gatherings will be lifted as of Memorial Day. At the same time, the state Department of Health said that when outdoors, a person must wear a face covering only if they are around people outside their household and cannot maintain social distancing.

The lack of the concert series last year hurt bars and restaurant in the downtown area that benefited from so many concertgoers coming into town, James said.

Even if the organizers wanted to resume concerts earlier, James said there was no way they could.

“June and July are not feasible,” James said.

The concert series typically ran from June through the end of August. But, with the possibility of only having a shortened season “so many people want us to got into September,” James said.

With concerts curtailed in 2020, James said there will be no problem getting acts perform in front of an audience at the park.

“We have bands lined up from here to eternity,” James said.
