Greensburg’s Yumzio Bistro planning move downtown

A Greensburg restaurant is hoping to find new eaters by moving up the street to a new location.

Yumzio closed at 640 North Main St. on Sunday. It will open within a week, though the date isn’t certain, less than a mile up the road in a basement space in 41 North Main St.

The restaurant opened in October.

The two main reasons for the move, said owner Taylor Kalasky: rent and foot traffic.

At just over 620 square feet, the new spot is about half the size of the old location, and costs much less, Kalasky said.

The bistro’s original building is on the outskirts of town, while the new spot is in downtown Greensburg.

The old location had plenty of parking, and vehicles drove by frequently, but most of them didn’t become customers.

“A lot of people drive by, and they say ‘we should stop in,’ but don’t actually stop by,” Kalasky said.

She said the old building also had limited electrical power and available outlets, which restricted her ability to operate kitchen equipment.

“I was just kind of stuck doing what I was doing, and everyone was telling me to expand my menu, and I couldn’t do that there,” she said.

She said she was breaking even at the old shop, but barely.

Yumzio’s move is the latest departure from a North Main Street building that has become a revolving door for businesses over the past few years.

Mr. Bones Bistro occupied 640 North Main St. for 16 years, closing in 2017. A convenience store moved in in May 2018, but it closed within two months. Yumzio opened in October.

The new location was previously occupied by Sun Dawg Cafe until 2016, when Sun Dawg moved to a larger storefront in the adjoining building.

Because the space previously housed a restaurant, it didn’t need much renovation — just some cleaning and painting, Kalasky said.

Yumzio will keep the same menu offerings — focused on breakfast food, wraps, soups and sandwiches — and expand the restaurant’s vegan and vegetarian options, which have been in high demand since Yumzio opened, she said.
