Hanna's Town opening features reenactors; antiques sales scheduled
Historic Hanna’s Town will open for the season from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 30 with guided tours, reenactors, a blacksmith and games for kids.
Tours of the recreated 18th century frontier town in Hempfield will begin at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tours also will be offered on weekends in May and Wednesdays through Sundays starting in June. Reservations are recommended by calling Westmoreland Historical Society at 724-836-1800, ext. 210.
On April 30, members of the Revolutionary War-era Proctor’s Independent Battalion Westmoreland County Pennsylvania will encamp at the site’s fort and offer living history displays and demonstrations. Kids can try their hand at historic toys and games, and a blacksmith will ply his trade during part of the day.
Discounts and jam and honey tastings will be offered in the gift shop.
The historic site will hold its 49th season of antiques and collectibles sales on the second Sunday of each month, rain or shine, from May 8 through Oct. 9. Admission is $3 per car. Pets are not permitted. Call the historical society for information on reserving dealer spaces.
From 1773 through 1786, Hanna’s Town served as the site of the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains and the first seat of government for Westmoreland County. It hosted travelers along the Forbes Road and served as a recruitment center during the Revolutionary War.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is maintained by the historical society and Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation.
