A National Guardsman from Harrison City took top honors in the Governor’s Twenty marksmanship competition this month at the Fort Indiantown Gap Warrior Training Grounds.

Senior Airman Nicholas Yackovich was named the top shooter in the annual competition and, as such, received an embroidered Governor’s Twenty tab and a certificate.

Yackovich was one of 70 Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers and airmen to compete with rifles and pistols in multiple courses of fire for the 20 top spots.

Created in 1968, the Governor’s Twenty is a state-level National Guard award presented annually to the top 20 shooters in a state. Participants have the opportunity to test marksmanship skills and weapon systems in a simulated battle environment. Events include multiple distances and shooting positions.

“This match tests the skill and strength of our guardsmen through an intense marksmanship competition,” said Pennsylvania Adjutant General Tony Carrelli. “My congratulations goes to Senior Airman Yackovich for taking first place, and to all of the other competitors for their impressive dedication during this grueling competition.”

Yackovich is a 2015 graduate of Penn-Trafford High School, where he competed on the rifle team.

Three other guardsmen from Southwestern Pennsylvania were named to the Governor’s Twenty:

3) Staff Sgt. Robert Lydic, Pittsburgh

14) Tech. Sgt. Shawn McCreary, Pittsburgh

20) Airman 1st Class Patrick Michael, Aliquippa
