Anna Shevchik, 14, of Greensburg, runs out of the cold lake water with her friends after participating in a Polar Plunge hosted by the Greater Latrobe Parks & Recreation on Saturday, Jan. 8 at Keystone State Park. Almost 90 people braved the frigid waters to help raise money for youth swimming programs.

Despite temperatures in the teens, dozens of hardy souls participated in the Greater Latrobe Parks and Recreation’s first ever Polar Plunge on Saturday morning.

In all, more than 75 people had registered for the event at the Keystone State Park boat ramp in Derry Township, officials with the Loyalhanna Watershed Association said this week, and the actual crowd was estimated at close to 90 people. The event was a fundraiser in support of youth swimming programs.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Jenna Lake, temperatures hovered around 14 degrees by 9:45 a.m., minutes before the plunge kicked off. By 10:45 a.m., temperatures had soared to a whopping 19 degrees.
