A Hempfield Area middle school is closed today due to positive covid-19 cases, according to district officials.

Students at West Hempfield Middle School are attending classes remotely after the district was informed that two students contracted the virus and were at school while infectious, according to a letter from Superintendent Tammy Wolicki. Officials will use the time to complete contact tracing and to mitigate spread of the virus.

West Hempfield students are to return to in-person learning Monday.

This is the third school temporarily shuttered this week due to covid cases. West Point and West Hempfield elementary schools closed Tuesday and Wednesday after two students at each school contracted the virus, officials said. On online covid tracker shows both school now have no active cases.

Since Jan. 1, there have been 115 confirmed cases in the district, 84 students and 31 staffers, according to the tracker.

Free breakfast and lunch is available to West Hempfield Middle School students between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Northumberland Drive school. Technology support also is available between those times at Hempfield Area High School. Appointments can be set up by calling the help desk at 724-850-2241.

Wolicki reminded families to report positive cases to the school nurse, principals or to Lisa Maloney, supervisor of pupil services.
