A Hempfield Area middle school will close for two days this week because of positive covid-19 cases, district leaders announced Monday.

Students at West Hempfield Middle School will participate in remote learning Tuesday and Wednesday after two students at the school tested positive for covid-19 and were at the building while infectious, according to a letter from Superintendent Tammy Wolicki.

According to an online covid-19 tracker, there are three active cases at the school.

In the district, there are eight active cases, all of which are students, according to the tracker. In addition to the West Hempfield Middle School cases, one is at Fort Allen elementary, three are at the high school and one is at Maxwell elementary. Since Jan. 1, the district has had 140 positive cases.

This is the second time this month students at West Hempfield Middle School moved to remote learning due to covid cases. On April 16, students completed online classes after two positive cases were reported at the school, officials said at the time.

According to Wolicki, Pennsylvania System of School Assessments, or PSSAs, are postponed for those two days.

Extracurricular activities, as well as athletic practices and games, are canceled Tuesday and Wednesday.

Free breakfast and lunch is available for pickup at the school between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Technology support is available at the high school between those times. An appointment can be set up by calling the help desk at 724-850-2241.

Students will return to in-person learning Thursday.

Parents and guardians are reminded to inform school nurses, principals or Lisa Maloney, supervisor of pupil services, of positive cases.
