When Hempfield business owner Kris Wilkins was a child, holidays were a financially stressful time of year for his family.

That’s why Wilkins, owner of Beautiful Kitchens along North Greengate Road, is donating 50 turkeys to local families in need — no questions asked.

“I didn’t have much money growing up,” Wilkins said. “If I can help somebody else and take some stress off of somebody’s plate, by all means I want to do that.”

Families who would like to take advantage of Wilkins’ giveaway can call Beautiful Kitchens, 724-834-4480, to reserve a bird. About 20 and 25 turkeys have been claimed so far, Wilkins said.

Any remaining turkeys will be donated to Welcome Home homeless shelter in Greensburg and nonprofit Promise Center in Pittsburgh’s Homewood South neighborhood, he said.

Wilkins and his wife, Sun, were inspired to organize the turkey donation when Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were halted earlier this month amid the federal government shutdown.

The federal government reopened Nov. 13, reviving the SNAP program.

“Everybody deserves to have a good Thanksgiving,” Wilkins said. “That’s really the bottom line.”
