Hempfield is kicking off its Summer Concert Series with the grand opening of its new amphitheater this weekend.

Normally filled with kids playing sports and families enjoying the walking trail and pavilions, Hempfield Park will be home to bands, food trucks and lawn chairs.

Work on the Hempfield Smail Auto Group Amphitheater cost $382,000. On Saturday, East Coast Turnaround, a five-person band, and Switch, a five-piece band that plays a range of music from dance and pop to rock and country, are set to perform after township supervisors host a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The ceremony will start at 4 p.m., and bands will start performing at 5 p.m.

Speal’s on Wheels, a food truck that serves wraps and fries, will be available Saturday.

Other concerts are slated for throughout the summer, with performances with Jeff Jimerson, who sings the National Anthem at Pittsburgh Penguins games, and Aubrey Burchell, who competed on American Idol last year.
