About 20 Hempfield residents were evacuated from their homes Monday as a precaution after an unidentified construction crew reportedly struck a gas line, according to Westmoreland County dispatchers.

The incident occurred just before noon along Millersdale Road. No injuries were reported.

The residents were evacuated as a precaution while the gas line was repaired by Peoples Gas, the dispatcher said. The incident reportedly occurred along Millersdale Road, south of Route 30, near the intersection of Kerr Road.

Peoples Gas Co. spokesman Barry Kukovich expected the repairs to be complete by “late afternoon.”

He said a construction crew working on a sewage line is believed to have caused the damage.

No further information was available.
