The Hempfield Marching Band performs for spectators lined up along Route 136 to watch the homecoming parade for Hempfield Area High School.

Despite the homecoming dance being canceled, Hempfield Area school leaders are hoping to make the fall event as normal as possible.

Plans are in place to hold the traditional parade, said high school Principal Kathy Charlton. The parade typically travels Route 136 with permission from the township supervisors and the state.

“We are looking to have the parade as in past years, but will limit the number of individuals on school property to only those with tickets for the game,” said Superintendent Tammy Wolicki. “This should not be an issue as anyone who wants to view the parade can do so from Route 136 and socially distance.”

Still, the Oct. 2 event is dependent on the number of covid cases at the time. In case the parade is unable to go on as usual, Charlton listed a number of alternatives — including having the parade around the high school for ticket holders, or having the marching band perform on the field prior to the football game and march out after their performance.

In that option, the homecoming court would be introduced prior to the game, and would leave after their introduction.

Regardless of the scenario, Charlton said she is hopeful space can be opened up for seniors to be able to attend the event.

“One of the most important parts of homecoming, I believe, is the kids and their ability to be there,” she said.

Charlton added, “That’s where we stand with homecoming right now, just a big question mark. It’s all dependent on the numbers, but all the pieces are in place so we can readily accommodate whatever the numbers are.”

Wolicki noted that the event will rely on balance between what would be done during a normal year and student and staff safety.
