A Hempfield man is accused by state police of punching another motorist after his Taco Bell order fell to the floor when he had to stop suddenly outside the restaurant, according to court papers.

Michael A. Matrone, 62, was charged Monday with strangulation, simple assault and harassment.

Troopers were called to Hempfield Plaza on Jan. 4 at 1:45 p.m. for a reported road rage incident. A motorist told investigators that Matrone punched him in the face multiple times while holding him by the neck, blocking his airway, according to court papers. The man had a swollen left eye and redness on his face and neck, police said.

Police caught up with Matrone at his home about an hour later. Matrone told troopers he braked suddenly after the motorist “slammed on his brakes,” causing his dog to hit the windshield and his food to fall, according to court papers.

Matrone told investigators he got out of his vehicle and pushed the man, but denied hitting him. Police said Matrone’s knuckles were red.

When reached by the Tribune-Review on Monday, Matrone said he didn’t know anything about the incident or charges against him, which were being mailed by summons. No court action had been set.
