A Hempfield man is accused of assaulting a pregnant woman and her unborn child during an incident at his apartment over the weekend.

State police arrested Richard A. Haubrich Jr., 33, on Sunday on charges of aggravated assault of an unborn child, strangulation and related offenses.

Troopers were called to West Hills Village Apartments at 1 a.m. by the woman who said Haubrich threw an item at her face while she was sleeping and then smothered her with a pillow for about 40 seconds, according to court papers. He is accused of jumping on her stomach, police said.

The woman had swelling on her face and blurry vision. She was taken to a hospital.

She told police Haubrich had been on a drug binge for four days at the time of the incident, according to court papers. He was being held without bail at the Westmoreland County Prison. An attorney was not listed in court records. A Feb. 24 preliminary hearing is set.
