A Hempfield man died this week from burns suffered in a fire inside his apartment, state police said.

Michael J. Serafin, 66, died Tuesday in UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he was flown after the blaze around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, said fire marshal Trooper Keith J. Sobecki.

Serafin lived alone in the Humphrey Apartments at 512 Humphrey Road. Firefighters rescued him from the apartment and he was in critical condition, Sobecki said.

Sobecki said he’s been unable to determine the fire’s cause.

Ten other residents of the apartment complex, owned by Westmoreland Community Action, were evacuated and moved to area hotels. Sobecki said the fire was contained to Serafin’s apartment, but the other apartments had heavy smoke damage.
